Seven bands – some internationally acclaimed, all based in Colorado – will perform in one day for the Brighton Blues Blast, kicking in at noon on May 28 at the Armory performing Arts Center. Co-headliners in the evening show, beginning at 7 p.m. in the Armory auditorium will be two International Blues Challenge contestants:
The Michael Hornbuckle Band, recognized last year (and sent to the IBC) as the Mile High Blues Society’s Best Blues Band and for Best Self-Produced Album; and Lionel Young, who won the IBC Solo/Duo Division in 2008. Hornbuckle’s crew will release a new album in August (The Memphis Sessions). All-around music lovers might be familiar with Lionel Young beyond being the leader of Westword’s Best Blues Band honor in its Best of Denver: He plays violin with the Denver Chamber Orchestra and with the Central City Opera Orchestra.
Beginning at noon on the outdoor stage, Felonious Smith, a trio from Boulder, plays pre-war blues, including Gospel, Delta, ragtime and folk.
Brighton’s own Bumkin plays alt/country Southern rock/blues and honky tonk at 1 p.m.
Area favorites for the past 10 years, Papa Juke plays at 2 p.m. • Eef and the Blues Express, who represented the Colorado Blues Society (Members Choice Award for Best Songwriter in 2012) at the IBC in 2015, will play at 3 p.m.
The Delta Sonics return to the Blues Blast for the 4 p.m. outdoor slot (they played in 2014).
Outdoor performances are free. Tickets for the 7 p.m. show are $25 general admission and $35 VIP. Call 303-655-2140 for more information. Purchase tickets through brightonarmory.org or at the Armory box office.
